Dear Basketball God's, Thank You. Sincerely, Hornets Fans
In the summer of 2019, the Charlotte Hornets foolishly let their best player in franchise history walk out the door. Kemba Walker, the Hornets all time leading scorer and a pillar in his community, left Charlotte and took his talent to Boston. When Kemba left, this led to many questions from the fanbase. Why didn't we trade him at the deadline? Why didn’t we offer the supermax? Why did our initial offer not reach $170 million? Why did they sign Terry Rozier for $58 million? The Hornets fanbase was left stunned and hopeless when Kemba left…… Until now.
Weeks later , the Hornets used the 12th pick in the draft to select PJ Washington, a skilled forward from Kentucky who could hit the three ball and play down low. Once again, this was a head scratching move only because a year prior, the Hornets took Miles Bridges, a small forward. Before the season opener, there were many questions regarding this team but, I believe Hornets fans are looking forwards the bright future. PJ Washington’s debut came with a 3 pointer record being set and since then, he has become a solid player. Miles Bridges has shown flashes of greatness and is looking like the first rounder he was drafted to be. However, the brightest spot on the team is the former 2018 2nd round pick, Devonte Graham.
In his rookie year, Devonte played behind Kemba Walker and Tony Parker, watching, waiting, and learning. He averaged 4.7 points, 1.2 rebounds, and 2.6 assists with 14 minutes of playing time. When the offseason arrived, Tony Parker retired and Kemba Walker headed to Boston and with the signing of Terry Rozier, nobody thought about Devonte Graham. However, after Graham’s 40 point performance last night in Brooklyn, the league is now on notice. Sitting in the shadows, constantly watching 2 great guards in Kemba and Tony has paid off for Devonte. He has adopted some of their playing styles and has boosted himself into the Most Improved Player conversation. Devonte is now averaging 20 points, 8 assists, and 3 rebounds. He is top 3 in three pointers made while shooting 43% from behind the arc. He has shown the ability to score at will while also shown the ability to boost the play of his teammates. The future is promising and the emergence of Graham has been able to soothe the pain of the departure of Kemba Walker. So once again..
Dear Basketball Gods,
Thank you.
Sincerely, Hornets Fans
